food storage closet shelves Where to Put Your Food Storage

Once you have your basic food storage, where do you put it all? I wanted all of my food storage to be in one accessible place. I was fortunate enough to have closet space underneath my stairs, that opened up into the kitchen; this makes for a great second pantry.

I got shelves built-in for a reasonable price using 3/4″ plywood (pictured above). Since my food storage is #10 cans, the shelves are 3 cans deep and 2 cans high. They are also built with the ability to store the cans in the boxes as well as having a viable walkway to the back of the closet. Overall, I was able to store over 650 #10 cans (pictured below in boxes) in this closet.

One of the more difficult problems facing people with food storage is finding room for it. This may vary depending on your circumstances, as well as where you live. It is best to keep at room temperature, as well as protected from any moisture or humidity. You certainly DO NOT want to store it in your garage. If you do not have a specific room or closet set aside specifically for its purpose, here are a few suggestions for places you might not have otherwise considered: under beds in boxes for easy retrieval; between the couch and the wall; between a bed head board and wall; along the wall of a closet underneath hanging clothes; mount 12 inch deep shelves, floor to ceiling, along a wall and then cover with drapes hung from the ceiling; stack boxes and put on a plywood tabletop and cover with a cloth for an end table.

So, where do you keep your food storage?
