Food for a 72-Hour Kit is vitally important.
You need at least 1 gallon of water per person per day in portable containers. A simple way of doing this is the purchase of a 24-pack of 16 ounce water bottles. This is equivalent to 3 gallons of water. Have one of these 24-packs for each member of the household.
You want 3 days worth of non-perishable food that needs no cooking or hot water before it can be eaten. Canned foods are heavy in weight; you will want to limit what canned foods you have. Also, some canned foods have a flip top lid that does not require a can opener. THESE ARE NOT RECOMMENDED. Over time, they will bust. Just include a manual can opener in your 72-Hour Kit (as well as appropriate eating utensils).
Here are some recommended foods:
High Calorie Food Bars
MRE (Meal Ready to Eat)
Dried fruit
Tuna Packs
Jerky
Crackers
Powdered Milk
Peanut Butter
Granola Bars
Trail Mix
